History of Surprise
The first land owner in the area that is known as Surprise today was a woman by the name of Flora Statler. Statler bought her property and settled in the area during the year 1938 shortly before she met her husband, Homer Ludden. She named her little town Surprise because she often said that she would be surprised if it ever became successful.
While Surprise remained a small town for many years and only contained a handful of small businesses and homes, it grew rapidly during the 1990s after the construction of Sun City Grand. Sun City Grand is a resort community that was developed by Del Webb for senior citizens. After Sun City Grand's construction, Surprise's population ballooned from slightly over 10,000 people in 80s to more than 100,000 by 2007.
