Peoria AZ Real Estate, Peoria Area and Community Information

Peoria is also where the Seattle Mariners and the San Diego Padres conduct their annual
spring training.
History of Peoria
In about 1868, a group of pioneers under the direction of a man by the name of John Swilling settled in the area that is now known as Peoria. Since most of the area was desert land, they had to dig irrigation ditches in the Salt River Valley. As time went on, more people settled in the area and reaped the benefits of the irrigation system.
However, the settlement saw its most success when several settlers led by William Murphy came from Peoria, Illinois and began construction of a 41-mile canal. They named the area Peoria after their hometown, and they were successful in creating a thriving farming community that continues to grow today.
